Our Team
Ryan Nummela
President & CEO
Born in Marquette and raised in Negaunee, I’m basically contractually obligated to love the U.P., snowstorms, and talking about the weather with complete strangers.
I’ve been in the insurance industry since 1998, which means I’ve spent a large portion of my life helping people protect what matters most — while also trying to convince them that insurance can actually be interesting. (Results may vary.)
My wife and I raised three boys who all went through the Negaunee school system from kindergarten through graduation. Somewhere during those years, I also became a little league coach, professional snack-hauler, and weekend sports taxi driver. If you ever sat through a cold spring baseball game in Upper Michigan, there’s a good chance we crossed paths.
I’m a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey and have always believed in staying involved in the community that raised me. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as President of the Marquette County Young Professionals Organization, President of the Upper Peninsula Association of Insurance Agents, and serving on the state board of Independent Insurance Agents.
In 2017, I was honored to be named the Professional Insurance Agents of Michigan Agent of the Year for the entire state of Michigan — which was a pretty big moment for a kid from Negaunee who still prefers a good conversation over a fancy title.
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, spending time near the water, sports, and making the most of summer before winter reminds us who’s really in charge around here. I love meeting new people, helping clients feel comfortable, and bringing a little humor into what can sometimes be a very serious business.
At the end of the day, insurance is about relationships, trust, and helping people sleep a little easier — preferably without having to read a 47-page policy booklet first.

I value community, connection, and providing dependable service both personally and professionally.
Julie Cygan
Insurance Relations Consultant
Born a Hoosier but raised a Yooper, my roots took hold in Houghton and Calumet before I set off to see the world as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Brazil. After graduating from Northern Michigan University, I spent some time gaining broader work experience in Lower Michigan and raising my three daughters.
However, the U.P. always calls its own home. I returned to the area and joined the Elder Agency in 2016. With over 25 years of customer service experience and over a decade in the insurance industry, I’ve found that my true passion lies in educating my clients. I want to ensure you truly understand your options, so you get exactly what you need and want. When I’m not at the office, I’m usually camping with my husband, behind a camera lens, or crocheting a blanket to gift away.
Kate Nasser
Marketing
I was raised in the Lower Peninsula in the small town of Holly in the Detroit area, and I decided to venture north for a college experience at NMU. I studied hospitality management and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2016. After pursing my hospitality endeavors of wedding planning, I learned that I was most passionate about helping others. I made the switch to the Elder Agency in 2017 and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of the knowledgeable and friendly team and to assist the people of the Upper Peninsula! Though my role has changed since having my 2 sons, I am happy to still be here part time. I enjoy spending my time outside with my husband, children, and dogs. I also enjoy cooking and baking (you will see my name on the Elder cookie trophy as the OG winner!). Please give me a call or come in to visit with any questions or concerns!

Alex has volunteered with the Lions Club, Big Brothers / Big Sisters, Little League Baseball, and multiple fundraisers for youth hockey in the area.

Support Specialist
I was born in Washington, although I have spent most of my life in the Marquette area. I was pursuing a degree in English-Writing at Northern Michigan University before I started at Elder Agency. I am new to the world of insurance, and I am excited to pursue this career and all the possibilities that it opens up. Alongside my professional work, I am a self-published author of several novels: receiving Honorable Mention in novel writing from The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in 2018. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my significant other, Alex, and caring for our four eccentric and playful chinchillas. I look forward to helping with any of your insurance needs!
Taylor Johnson
Director of First Impressions
Hello! I was born and raised in Marquette. I find peace in being outdoors, whether it be camping, biking, or just taking a stroll. I have enjoyed reading and writing from a young age, and this love for literature led me to pursue a college degree in Journalism, graduating from Northern Michigan University in 2017. During high school and into college, I held several retail jobs and worked at the local newspaper after graduating from NMU. The thing I liked most about the jobs I had was the relationships I formed with clients. I enjoyed getting to know people and helping them to the best of my ability. For me, helping people is one of the most satisfying aspects of life. I joined the Elder team in February 2025 and have loved my position as Director of First Impressions since day one. I am delighted to be part of a team that strives to maintain exceptional customer relations and service. When you call the office, I am almost always the first person to answer the phone. I’m always open and ready to assist you with any questions, concerns, or needs you may have. I hope to chat with you soon!
